6/28/2023 0 Comments Nausea by jean paul sartre![]() ![]() Antoine wanted to finish his historic study about marquis de Rollebon, a man who lived in the 18 th century and used to travel a lot. He had no will or desire to travel so he decided to stick around in a city named Bouville. Then he met Anny and had a relationship with her but he hadn't seen her for a few years. He also took part in many archaeological expeditions in India. The novel became an inspiration for many other authors.Īntoine Roquetin has a diary and travels Asia, Africa, and Europe. The novel almost has no plot and revolves around the question of existence, life meaning, freedom, human will and the world's indifference towards an individual. His conscious is the main aspect of this novel filled with philosophic and essayistic paragraphs. The work "Nausea" is written like Antoine's diary. The main characters are Antoine Roquetin, Self-Taught Man (his real name is Ogier P.) and Anny. The novel describes a few week in the empty life of Antoine Roqueting who is haunted by feeling of nausea and the fear of existence. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A helpful and/or enlightening book that is extremely well rounded, has many strengths and no shortcomings worth mentioning.Ĩ – Very good. Their leader is the Prophet, who is the head of both the church and government, enforcing a body of strict rules and laws based on the Holy Protocol. Here, the people live in a closely-knit but insular community, following the word of the Father. The story follows sixteen-year-old Immanuelle who hails from a shepherding family in the small isolated village of Bethel. Perhaps that’s why I finished the book with some mixed feelings, though in the end I felt this was a solid effort for the author’s first novel. ![]() This debut by Alexis Henderson had already drawn comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale and other highly acclaimed TV shows and movies like Salem and The VViwtch, and I mean, those are some mighty big standards to live up to. The twists & turns had me guessing at every moment & by the end I was stunned with how it all played out… but it all made perfect sense! ![]() It was also a story about a sister relationship & female friendship, along with the FMC finding her place in the world.īut the best part… nothing was EVER told! everything was shown to you through action - including the magic. ![]() The demons written in this story were their own masterpiece, they were similar to ones we all know but had enough of a spin on it that they all felt completely unique. There were genuine moments of thriller / horror scenes playing out in my mind while reading & I was on the edge of my seat. ![]() I felt like I was watching a movie most of the time with the descriptions - especially the fight scenes with the demons! It was like watching a female The Witcher. This story took me completely by surprise! I was hooked with the initial description - a witch who was a long foretold beauty & saviour of all witchkind is left horribly disfigured & shunned by her people, now hunts demons with her sister.Īnd while, Yes, this is where this books starts - & what it is about - it is SO much more than that! ![]() If you like a gritty world with a true bad ass FMC then this is the book for you! ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Poems from the outsiders![]() ![]() The small, shorter trees envied his heightĪnd his long arms which sprung with new birthįor the tips of this tree were not even in sight His roots had more water, his branches, more height His tree trunk was stronger, his blossoms more bright With green leaves that swayed in the breeze. This is still pretty fragile stuff for me. ![]() I hope this resonates with some of you, and if it doesn’t, be gentle. ![]() And I have to admit that nothing has changed very much. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider, this one’s for you. This poem, which I wrote when I was 14, is dedicated to anyone who ever longed to feel ordinary, who ever wanted to dim their light and sparkle less, so they could fit in. (I politely declined – these were my private poems and not meant for public viewing.) I was cleaning out my storage unit and came across the book of poems I wrote as a young girl – the book a publisher wanted to publish back when I was 15. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Happy Talk by Richard Melo![]() ![]() With that in mind, my writing technique is quite a bit like practicing voodoo. I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum, though, and lean more heavily on my imagination than personal experience. Tom Wolfe believes that novel writing should be like journalism and rely on in-person reporting, and I see value in that kind of work. I’m not a scholar or an academic, but I can write a novel, so that’s the direction I took. ![]() These were not works that I could just read and put away on a shelf. ![]() ![]() I was inspired mostly by Maya Deren's study of Haitian voodoo and dance in The Divine Horseman, as well as William Gaddis' brilliant, dialogue-driven novel, The Recognitions, which was published in 1955. I'm always on the lookout for material that might flourish in a novel, and idea of unwitting Americans channeling voodoo spirits seemed to have limitless dramatic (and comic) (and cosmic) possibilities. My own tendency is to want to create emotional connections to the characters as much as possible, which might just make me a lousy postmodernist. I drew the book from 1960s postmodern novels that featured characters who were often more alienating than endearing. Happy Talk is a novel full of minor characters playing major parts. Where did the idea for this novel come from? ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments Terry pratchett feet of clay![]() ![]() ![]() 'A hundred dollars?' the man said suspiciously. In fact, it even had a small coronet moulded on to its head. It reminded him of one of the old pictures of the city's kings, all haughty stance and imperious haircut. This one gleamed like a newly polished statue, perfect down to the detailing of the clothes. But it wasn't like the usual lumpen clay things that you occasionally saw. It was also a golem, the man could see that. I've been asking around but it's wicked the prices you're going for these days.' The golem rubbed the words off the slate and wrote: TO YOU, ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. ![]() Of course, golems couldn't speak, could they? 'Hah. 'Well? What do you want at this time of night?' The golem handed him a slate, on which was written: WE HEAR YOU WANT A GOLEM. It was big and dark red and looked like a child's clay model of a man. There was no mistaking the shape right in front of him, though. He thought maybe there'd been very faint points of light. But he thought afterwards that there had been shapes out there, just beyond the light spilling out into the road. He might as well have tried to see through white velvet. There was mist coming off the river and it was a cloudy night. A man opened it and peered out into the street. It was a warm spring night when a fist knocked at the door so hard that the hinges bent. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments The Sowing by Steven dos Santos![]() ![]() ![]() The third book in The Torch Keeper series, THE RAISING, will be released in January of 2016.
